taking all bets.
I noticed my steering on the highway was getting...um...variable. I checked the steering rods and ball joints and then I checked this wheel. oh boy. Going to try for the easy stuff first of re-setting the preload on the bearing and seeing what that does. Next step would be replacing the bearing and finally...and hopefully not, another knuckle rebuild.

I think you are probably right. are those CV shafts up front on that? Are the wheel bearings very expensive for it? If it was loose like that while driving, I hate to thing about what the bearing surfaces look like.

yeah, Im worried that it may be new bearing time, which is a pain since it means pulling the hub off and replacing all the seals. The CV joint is a birfield type and its fully sealed inside the knuckle. I checked the knuckle and there is plenty of great so Im not sure if that could be the problem...but...there is some caked on grease near the ball and when I move the tire I don’t feel the hub moving so it COULD be the trunion bearings.

Sounds like: your wheel bearing is now a washing machine.
Replace wheel bearing and see if the washing machine noise goes away.
I helped my cousin with his ‘05 Tacoma that you just purchase the bearing and have to separate the hub from the bearing yourself. Is yours like that? It was a pain in the ass & we split the cost of a harbor freight shop press so I could help him out.

its all hand tools for buh removal on these axles. They are floating so there is no pressure on the axle shaft.

Good news.
I've never owned a Toyota, so I learn by asking. Good luck with the fix.
